Message 1196 - Posted: 31 Jan 2018, 4:58:04 UTC

Hello everyone,

After the disaster that was last week, I took the advice of LumenDan and I've created a new app, sofiabeta. I'll be using this app in the future to trial new client versions and changes before using the main sofia app.

The sofiabeta app is opt in, so if you don't want to run it, you don't have to. You can opt into / out of running test applications here.

There's currently a set of test workunits waiting, which I've split into 6 runs to ease the ridiculous computation times.

I hope this goes smoothly.

Sam

I guess that means I won't be able to opt in as a pool miner, unless the pool administrators implement a method to do so through their website?

Hi Sam, do you have an ETA on the release of those beta WUs?

All of this doesn't change the fact that things like this happened:

https://sourcefinder.theskynet.org/duchamp//results.php?hostid=5630&offset=0&show_names=0&state=5&appid=

30 tasks with run times of 3-4 hours, all of them cancelled. This is extremely discouraging, you should at least manually assign some points for trying.

I would suggest you ask over in their forums. Sofar as I know, nobody consulted Sam before adding us. We were barely stable when this occurred so I don't know who had the bright idea of having SourceFinder added... In fact, you can relay we don't want to be listed for the near future.

What Sam did in the past was increase the credit granted for successive batches. But right now, he has to get things stable else it's a moot point... :/

I haven't seen this "Can't Validate" issue before. Something must've changed with the beta app somehow. I tested that all of the BOINC applications functioned correctly before launching it, and they seemed to be all fine. I'll take a look into it as soon as possible.

EDIT: It looks like those are from the previous SoFiA run that failed abysmally. The sofiabeta test WUs don't don't seem to have been dispatched yet. I might be able to fix that quickly

Hi,

I've received some new work units but during their download, I received the message:

"Giving up on download of SofiaVM_1.5.vdi: permanent HTTP error"

Not sure how to fix this (or if I even can from my side).

Regards

The file permissions for the SoFiA beta application haven't been set properly on the server, we can see the file but we aren't allowed to download it.

Seems like the server permission issue happened once or twice before.

I have disabled downloading tasks for this project on my PC due to download errors.

Please use this thread:
https://sourcefinder.theskynet.org/duchamp/forum_thread.php?id=270

for reports & issues for the Sofia Beta Client testing. This will help Sam keep track of them as well as for other users to check if others are having similar issues.

Thank you!

I see it now. Apparently I had the file from before but the error appeared when I reset. I'll drop a note to Sam.

Thanks,

The HTTP error should be fixed. There's another issue I'm currently looking at concerning the parameter files not extracted on the client properly. It looks like I've hardcoded the name 'sofia' somewhere, so it doesn't like me changing the app name to 'sofiabeta'. I'll make sure to get that issue fixed today.

Edit: BOINC is currently disabled on the server until this new VM version has finished registering. I'll re-enable it in a few hours when I get the chance. WUs should actually work again after that.

If you wish for SourceFinder to be removed from the Gridcoin Whitelist we need to hear this from Sam himself.

SourceFinder shouldn't have been listed in the first place without consultation. The project wasn't ready for an influx of new users expecting a stable project. We're left fielding these inquiries about Gridcoin which we don't know ANYTHING about...

Here is a post by the project admin, Sam, on the whitelisting proposal for SourceFinder in MAY of 2017 (https://cryptocurrencytalk.com/topic/83717-duchamp-sourcefinder/?tab=comments#comment-389623). He was informed about the whitelisting, in fact his activity in the thread regarding the project and its outcomes likely guided the resulting "Yes" vote for inclusion into our whitelist. If Sam wants his project off the whitelist, he needs to express this to us himself.

Well, I do stand notified although I did say I wasn't aware if he had. :)

Looks like Sam already posted. He didn't say no but he didn't exactly give it his blessing either. ;) Maybe Gridcoin should let projects age longer before adding them in. Seen a lot of projects go idle or disappear this last year...

Do see users posting to projects (and BOINC) about this rather than to Gridcoin (or whatever service it is). Either they're not reading the info provided or it's not clear the individual projects have nothing to do about with their getting their credit in the system.

Nothing against Gridcoin though. I'd join, but the team thing was a deal-breaker. I've been with my mates since SETI classic.

This whole crypto thingy is a new concept after all. In reality, very few people understand how it works (actually, I decided to take a full cryptocurrency course on Coursera and study programming and cryptography on Khan Academy just to fully understand cryptos), so don't blame them. Gridcoin / BOINC interaction mess makes it even harder to understand what's going on where.

Gridcoin team requirement will most likely be removed later this year, people have been complaining about this from the beginning.

SETI classic... It took days to crunch a single task on my old 266 MHz AMD CPU. Good times.
